Another summer cottage season is coming to an end, which means it’s time to collect the remaining harvest and tidy up the garden and vegetable patch.
However, in October it is possible to sow some crops in a greenhouse, which will allow you to get a harvest before the cold weather arrives.
These include greens: herbs such as dill, parsley, cilantro, arugula or spinach.
All the listed crops are resistant to cold and can boast of being unpretentious.
It takes them about a month to grow.
A pleasant bonus: greens grown in the fall are more aromatic than those grown in the summer, so you can safely use them in salads, meat and other dishes, and also freeze or dry them for the winter.
Salads with a short growing season are sown as early as October, which allows you to enjoy the harvest before the cold weather sets in.
The same applies to Chinese and Japanese kale – they need about 1.5 months to grow 10-centimeter leaves.
Now you can still sow radishes, the autumn harvest of which will be much better, because due to the cool weather the fruits are juicy and do not become bitter, as in summer, or watery, as in spring.
If you no longer plan to grow vegetables, the freed-up beds can be sown with green manure.
