Probably every summer resident who has currant bushes on his plot is concerned with the question: what needs to be done with the plants to achieve a high yield?

The answer to this question was found by an expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh .

Apply fertilizer correctly

Currants have a superficial root system, which is often damaged by weeding, loosening and even fertilizing - if the method with subsequent sealing is used.

To avoid damaging the roots, make several holes around the perimeter of the bush, into which add a teaspoon of fertilizer mixture.

Mulch the currants

Mulch will save you from several problems at once, including drought, powdery mildew, weeds, etc. But you should not consider mulching material only as protection - it is also a source of nutrition for currants.

To achieve a good currant harvest, combine mulching with organic fertilizing in the spring, adding a bucket of humus under each bush.

To mulch currants, you can use straw, hay or cardboard, but the best option is sawdust.

Avoid soil acidification

If you decide to follow the advice and mulch the currants with sawdust, remember that wood shavings can acidify the soil, and currants feel oppressed in highly acidic soils.

Therefore, be sure to soak the sawdust in a solution of urea or ammonium nitrate (1 tablespoon per 10-liter bucket of water). Undiluted whey will do.

Earlier we talked about a green manure crop called mustard .
