Whether black currants will produce a good harvest year after year depends largely on the planting location.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist and landscape designer, tells us where in the garden you should plant currants.
Where to plant currants
Black currant loves moist soil and does not tolerate drafts; it should be planted in low, moist areas, well protected from the wind.
However, depressions, pits, swampy areas and areas with close groundwater levels are not suitable for planting currants.
Also, currants do not do well in acidic soils; lime is added to such areas.
The ideal time to plant currants is autumn. Three to four weeks before planting, the soil must be fertilized.
Earlier, the expert told whether it is possible to treat the garden from diseases and pests in the spring.
