Growing a tangerine tree at home is quite an exciting activity.

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh spoke about all stages of this process, from the selection and preparation of material to caring for a young plant, and also shared useful advice from experienced gardeners.

What you need to know before you start growing tangerines

It is not enough to simply stick a tangerine seed into the ground and wait for it to sprout. It is necessary to water the plant regularly, because drying out can be fatal for it.

Another important point: without grafting, the tangerine tree will only perform a decorative function, but even in this case, it will look very original and attractive.

1. Collect at least 10 large, undamaged seeds from a ripe tangerine. The washed seeds should be soaked in damp gauze or hydrogel for several days to germinate.

2. Prepare a pot with drainage holes, on the bottom of which a drainage layer of expanded clay or small stones is placed.

3. Fill the pot with prepared substrate, consisting of sand or special soil for germinating seeds, avoiding the use of peat.

4. Bury the seeds at a shallow depth in the substrate and water them moderately.

5. Create a greenhouse effect by covering the pot with film or glass. Periodically open it for 15 minutes for ventilation.

6. Place the pot in a warm place and wait for the first shoots to appear approximately 3 weeks after planting.
