Apple tree seedlings may grow poorly even with proper care.
Why this happens and what to do about it, says Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist and landscape designer.
Why does the apple tree grow poorly?
Firstly, this happens when the seedling is brought from the south. If you bought a seedling at the market or on the side of the road, most likely it is from the south.
Such trees do not grow well in the middle zone, they constantly freeze in winter. You are unlikely to get a harvest from them, usually they die after four or five years.
Don't waste your time and energy, get rid of the tree and plant a zoned variety.
Secondly, the reason may be the high level of groundwater.
For trees on vigorous rootstocks it should not exceed three meters, for medium-sized ones – 2.5 m, for dwarf ones – 1.5 m.
In this case, the only way out is to carry out radical pruning and grow the apple tree as a compact tree 2-2.5 m high.
Thirdly, the problem may be poor soil (sand, sandy loam). Regular fertilization and growing peas in the tree trunk circles will help to correct the situation.
