We won’t argue: the foliage of indoor plants can turn yellow all year round, but you will have to agree – this problem is especially acute in winter.

Why this happens and what to do about it, was explained by the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh .

The main reason, according to the expert, is low humidity.

The optimum values for most indoor plants are about 60%, whereas with the start of the heating season this parameter generally drops to 30%.

Dry air literally “sucks” water from the leaves of plants, causing them to turn yellow and, in some cases, even fall off, as the plant, in an attempt to protect itself from drying out, sheds its leaves to reduce the area of water evaporation.

Don't think that additional watering will help you cope with the problem. On the contrary, it can lead to root rot, since in winter with its short daylight hours many flowers enter a period of relative rest.

This means that all processes carried out by the plant, including the absorption of water by the roots, slow down.

So take a look at other options that should help your “green pets”.

1. For plants in small pots, you can use a tray with small pebbles, expanded clay or sphagnum moss. Place the flowerpot in it and pour water - this will make the substrate moist.

2. If you have to deal with large flowers, use a fine spray. The procedure is carried out 1-2 times a day.

3. And, of course, get a humidifier – it will be useful not only for your indoor plants, but also for you.
