How to Help Houseplants Survive Winter: Wilting, Stunting, and Dying Flowers Are No Longer Your Problem

Not all gardeners know that in winter the usual care of indoor plants needs to be changed. If this is not done, the flowers will feel uncomfortable, which will inevitably lead to a deterioration in their condition.

An expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told what we can do for our "green pets".

It’s worth starting early: in the fall, be sure to treat the “plantings” on the windowsill with agents against pests and diseases.

So, for fighting insects, such preparations as "Aktellik", "Fitoverm", "Akvarin", etc. are suitable, and to overcome various kinds of diseases, you can use "Hom", "Fundazol", "Bentlat", etc.

For plants that need rest during the winter, try to find a cooler place.

And, of course, change the care scheme. It is worth starting with watering - despite the fact that for each flower the frequency of watering and the volume of water used are different, they are definitely less than in the summer.

Changes in watering do not concern, perhaps, only the so-called “water drinkers”, which include cyperus, sedge, papyrus, etc.

The signal that it is time to grab the watering can is the drying of the soil surface. A good option is sprinkling with warm water in the bathtub. After this procedure, be sure to make sure that the plants have dried in the warmth.

Due to dry air, do not ignore such a “procedure” as spraying, and be sure to move the flowers away from heating devices (except for those that are harmed by the cold).

When the active growth and flowering stage ends, reduce fertilizing to a minimum. Plants that are resting in winter should not be fertilized at all, while for the rest, the frequency of fertilizing should not exceed once a month.

Finally, about additional lighting: it is only necessary for flowering plants. Those that are resting should be moved to a dark place or left in the same conditions.

Earlier we talked about what to plant in a flower bed to make it smell like chocolate and vanilla.
