Geranium can delight with its blooming throughout the year. However, in winter, geranium requires special attention and care.
Today you will learn about the main rules for caring for geraniums in winter: what to feed them with and how often to water them.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how to care for geraniums in winter.
Provide sufficient lighting
Geranium is a light-loving plant that needs 10-12 hours of bright light per day.
In winter, daylight is short, so you need to additionally illuminate the geranium with a phytolamp or fluorescent lamp.
The lamp should be placed at a distance of 20-30 cm from the plant and turned on in the morning and evening.
Maintain optimum temperature
Geranium is a heat-loving plant that does not tolerate cold and drafts.
In winter, the temperature in the room where the geranium is located should be between 15-18 degrees.
Do not place geranium on a windowsill where cold air may blow from the window, or next to a radiator where it may be too hot.
Also avoid sudden changes in temperature, which can harm the plant.
Regulate air humidity
Geranium is a dry-loving plant that does not like high humidity.
In winter, indoor air humidity can increase due to heating and lack of ventilation.
This can lead to the development of fungal diseases and root rot. To avoid this, you need to regularly ventilate the room where the geranium is located and do not spray water on the leaves and flowers.
You can also place a pot of damp clay or expanded clay next to the geranium, which will absorb excess moisture.
Water and feed correctly
Geranium is a plant that does not like overwatering and overfeeding.
In winter, geraniums need to be watered and fed less often than in summer, as the plant enters a period of dormancy and growth.
Geraniums need to be watered once every 7-10 days, when the top layer of soil dries out.
Geraniums need to be fed once a month using a weak solution of complex fertilizers for flowering plants.
Do not fertilize geraniums immediately after watering to avoid burning the roots.
This way you can maintain the health and beauty of your geranium in winter and enjoy its flowering all year round.
