Why You Shouldn't Leave Your Greenhouse Doors Open Over Winter: The Worst Thing You Can Do to Your Greenhouse

Many summer residents do not even think about whether it is possible to leave the greenhouse open during the winter.

This is their fatal mistake, says Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication BelNovosti, an agronomist and landscape designer.

Let's find out why the doors leading to the greenhouse must be kept closed.

Firstly, in the weather forecast for December, January and February, forecasters often warn that strong winds are coming.

This means that a greenhouse left with its doors open risks flying away from your site.

And secondly, in winter the ground “plays”, that is, it rises and falls, which cannot but affect the frame of the “greenhouse”.

Therefore, if you leave the doors open, the frame may become warped.

What can be done, farmers will ask, who expect that the soil in the greenhouse will freeze properly during the winter and that low temperatures will destroy pathogens and harmful insects? No way – as practice shows, due to the closed doors inside the greenhouse it is warmer than outside by only a few degrees, which means that the soil will freeze in any case.
