What to do in the garden in winter: it's too early to relax

27.11.2023 19:51

Most summer residents believe that with the onset of winter they can relax and catch their breath until the next season.

In fact, the garden needs care at this time, and it is not only about unstable weather and temperature changes. The main thing is to focus on pest control.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told what needs to be done in the garden in winter.

First, inspection of trees

Before the snow falls, you need to inspect the trees and bushes. You need to look for the offspring of the hawthorn butterfly. A sign of its presence is a web on the branches and shoots. The offspring should be burned.

Along with this, you need to inspect the trunk and branches where the goldtails may be hiding; they are removed along with the branch.

Most often, pests leave their offspring on the forks of branches. These can be red apple mites and winter moths. They need to be carefully scraped off with a scraper.

Aphids and leafhoppers overwinter on young shoots. During the February thaw, it is recommended to treat with a solution of "Nitrafen".

Secondly, soil inspection

Before the snow falls, you can attack the apple blossom beetle.

It overwinters in the upper soil layer. When the thaw comes, loosen the soil, be sure to loosen the soil in the raspberry plantings for the same purpose.

Thirdly, prevention of fungus and disease

Don't expect fallen leaves to fertilize the soil until spring. Most likely, the leaves will become a source of fungal diseases.

In addition, spider mites, weevils and other pests can overwinter under them.

Therefore, the garden needs to be cleared of fallen leaves before the snowfall begins.
