If you want to get a decent harvest from tomato bushes grown on your own windowsill, no matter how you look at it, you will have to try really hard.
Expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh shared secrets that will help you achieve your goal.
1. Lighting
Winter is always a short daylight period, and the lack of light for plants, in turn, goes hand in hand with stress. Hence the conclusion - additional lighting is simply necessary for growing tomatoes on the windowsill.
2. Soil
The soil must meet three characteristics: nutritional value, as well as good water and air permeability. You can use either ready-made soil or soil taken from your garden - however, in this case it is definitely worth disinfecting it using special compounds.
3. Air humidity
To ensure that this indicator is at a sufficient level, place the tomato pots on trays with wet drainage. Another mandatory procedure is spraying.
4. Watering
To moisten the soil in the pots, use settled water, and water using a watering can with a long spout.
5. Seeds
Don't think that any seeds are suitable for indoor growing. Suitable varieties include "Balcony Miracle", "Stone Flower", "Little Star", "Betta", etc.
6. Temperature
Not everyone knows this, but temperature changes and cold coming from the window can ruin all efforts to grow tomatoes on the windowsill. You can solve the problem with a thermal mat.
7. Top dressing
To get a decent harvest, do not forget to feed the tomatoes. So, the first time fertilizer (complex) should be applied after the seedlings have 4 true leaves. If you notice that the tomato seedlings have begun to stretch, try using a fertilizer called "Energy of the Sun". Another common problem is drying of leaves. To solve it, try using foliar feeding based on potassium metaborate.
