Why summer residents no longer bother with tomato seedlings: winter sowing methods

15.11.2023 13:38

Progress is inexorable, and agricultural experiments have led gardeners to the point that some summer residents are abandoning the traditional method of growing seedlings.

Instead of sowing seeds at the end of winter for seedlings, gardeners are offered winter sowing of tomatoes directly in the beds.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, spoke about innovations in growing tomatoes.

Advantages of winter sowing

Gardeners claim that this option frees you from the hassle of sowing, picking, lighting and other spring joys when growing tomato seedlings.

This frees up space on the windowsill, and you don’t have to think about how to transport seedlings to the dacha.

The first method of sowing

In November, just before the frost, you need to dig up the soil in the bed prepared for tomatoes, level it and prepare furrows up to 10 cm deep.

The seeds are placed in holes, covered with dry soil, fallen leaves, branches or covering material on top so that the wind does not blow away the leaves.

Gardeners assure that the seeds germinate no later than mid-spring.

The only drawback of this method is that until the spring warmth the seedlings will need to be protected from frost and cold.

In the spring, once the snow melts, all that remains is to dismantle the shelter and create greenhouse conditions for the sprouts.

The second way

This option is the simplest.

In the prepared soil, they make not furrows, but planting holes, and they bury not seeds, but whole tomatoes in them.

Next, we organize shelter and care for the seedlings according to the diagram above.
