How to collect sphagnum and what to do with it
Sphagnum grows in damp and marshy areas; it is best to look for it in lowlands, near small bodies of water.
You need to dig up the sphagnum carefully, using a small scoop, trying not to damage the moss cover.
At home, the moss should be thoroughly washed and placed in a solution of potassium permanganate for a couple of hours. After treatment, the sphagnum should be thoroughly dried.
In the spring, before sowing seeds for seedlings, dried sphagnum is added to the soil mixture (one part sphagnum to 5-6 parts soil).
Sphagnum improves soil structure and air exchange, and also retains moisture well. The seedlings will grow strong, and you can water them less often.
