Experienced gardeners prefer to cover all perennial ornamental crops for the winter, including roses. There are many nuances in this regard.
You need to wait for the best time to cover it, and also know what to cover the queen of the garden with.
Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told how to prepare roses for winter.
First, stop watering.
Excess moisture in the shoots during the winter only does harm. Therefore, watering is stopped after the last portion of fertilizers has been applied.
Secondly, apply fertilizer
Potassium, phosphorus and magnesium are added for the winter. But it is easier to use complex autumn fertilizers for roses. Wood ash is added together with mineral additives (1/2 bucket per 1 sq. m).
Thirdly, watch for shoots
If the shoots of the bushes are red, it means that the roses continue to grow. Mature shoots are usually green.
Fourthly, to hill up
The procedure is recommended to be performed in northern regions. In the south, where thaws often occur in winter, hilled roses may begin to rot.
Fifth, prune the roses.
Before the final onset of frost, cut off the buds and remove the leaves from the shoots and remove them from the trunk circle.
Damaged and weak branches are also cut off, along with shoots that grow inside the bush.
How to cover
1. Hybrid teas are covered when the air temperature drops steadily to +3 degrees Celsius. The bushes are covered with dry leaves and covered with spruce branches on top.
After this, you can install the frame and cover the rose with agrofibre.
2. Polyanthus and floribunda cover the roots. Also sprinkle with dry leaves and cover with spruce branches. The bush itself is covered with agrofibre.
3. Climbing trees are removed from the supports, trimmed if necessary, laid on the ground on a layer of spruce branches, fixing the trunks.
Then cover with dry leaves, a layer of spruce branches and agrofibre.
