Caring for remontant raspberries is somewhat different from traditional varieties. Many gardeners have long been pruning in such a way as to collect a richer autumn harvest than two harvests per season.

But when is the right time to prune this plant, in spring or autumn?

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, spoke about the proper care of remontant raspberries.

When to trim

According to science, this type of shrub needs to be tidied up in the spring.

This way you can detect new shoots and thin out the plantings if necessary.

However, it is not forbidden to trim the berry bush in autumn either. This must be done if the bush was left without trimming in spring.

You can start immediately after the leaves fall.

Pruning for two harvests

To harvest two crops per season, cut off part of the shoot that bore fruit last year to a height of up to one meter.

Important: the stem should be green inside. If the cut is dry, then cut the rod further to the green part.

After these shoots have produced a harvest, they are cut off almost to the ground.

Pruning for the autumn harvest

But most often, summer residents practice this method. It is simpler and allows you to collect a bountiful harvest in the fall.

To do this, in the spring you need to cut off all the first year shoots at ground level. Pruning is done at the end of March.
