Achieving a good onion harvest in a small garden is a matter of honor for every summer resident.
However, not every gardener succeeds in growing massive, healthy and tasty onion heads.
Sometimes pests interfere, sometimes rot finishes off the harvest, and the most common problem is small bulbs.
Expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh explained how to grow the onion of your dreams.
To get a rich harvest, you need to follow a few simple rules.
1. Choose the right onion variety. Different varieties have different ripening times and yields.
2. Observe the optimal time for planting onions. Usually, onions are planted in late April – early May, when the soil has already warmed up and the air is warm enough.
3. Provide enough sunlight. Onions love light and warmth, so it is important to choose a planting site that receives full sun throughout the day.
4. Don't forget about watering. Onions need regular watering, especially during the growth and flowering period. However, do not overdo it, so as not to allow water to stagnate.
5. Feed the onion. Onion needs nutrients, so you can use complex fertilizers for vegetables.
6. Harvest onions on time. Harvesting should be done before the onions begin to wilt and turn yellow. This will preserve their quality and taste.
