Summer residents put a lot of effort into growing a rich harvest of juicy and crispy cucumbers.

Gardeners provide the plantings with fertilizers, water them, remove weeds and loosen the soil. But it turns out that it is better not to touch the soil around the cucumbers.

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh explained why it is better not to loosen the soil under cucumbers.

Root damage

When loosening the soil, you can damage the roots of the plants, which will lead to their withering and death. The roots of cucumbers are located close to the surface of the earth, and when weeding, you can easily touch them.

In addition, the soil structure is disrupted. Because of this, plant roots may become less resistant to drought and other adverse conditions.

Instead of loosening

The expert recommends using mulch to retain moisture and prevent weed growth. For example, compost, which is a mixture of organic materials (leaves, grass, manure, etc.).
