Often, gooseberries become covered in spots, which clearly indicates that the plant is affected by an infectious or fungal disease.
It is necessary to understand what exactly happened and what means to use to carry out the treatment, because there are several reasons for the problem, as well as ways to solve them.
Expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh shared several details that will help you decide on this issue.
1. Spots on leaves
Leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by various types of leaf spot. It usually appears as round or oval spots on the leaves. Fungicides such as Topsin-M, Fundazol or Topaz can be used to combat this disease.
If the leaves are covered with yellow spots, this may indicate a lack of iron or phosphorus. In this case, you can apply appropriate fertilizers.
2. Spots on berries
Fruit mottling, or marbling, is a fungal disease. Berries may have spots of different sizes and shapes, which later turn brown. The same fungicides are used.
The presence of brown spots on berries may indicate that the bushes have been damaged by insect pests such as the gooseberry shoot aphid or gooseberry sawfly. In such cases, insecticides must be used.
3. Spots on the trunk
The fungal disease powdery mildew appears as white spots on the trunk and leaves. To combat this disease, fungicides or sulfur preparations are used.
The appearance of brown spots on the trunk may be a sign of damage to the bark. In this case, it is necessary to remove the damaged areas and treat the wounds with an antiseptic.
If there is any doubt about the correctness of the diagnosis, treatment should be carried out on a separate shoot so as not to harm the entire bush at once.
