The roots of the sign go back to ancient times, when the Slavs endowed the birch with mystical properties and considered it a sacred tree.

If we touch on folk signs, then there are many beliefs and legends about trees. Birch is one of the most popular plants that folklore talks about.

Protector in thunderstorms and assistant in agriculture

Ancestors planted birch trees on their plots of land with the belief that lightning would not strike them. People believed that the tree protected the house from thunderstorms. To protect against lightning, they even stacked birch branches in the attic.

The weather was predicted by the birch tree. Ancestors especially waited for the leaves to open. After that, they waited another 6-7 days and began planting. This was a sure sign that there was no need to expect a cold snap. Therefore, the tree became a symbol of long-awaited warmth and summer.

Peasants prepared birch stakes, which they stuck into the field. It was believed that this would drive away pests and grow a solid harvest.

A birch wreath was placed on the cows' horns. The animal walked with it all day and ate it in the evening. Ancestors believed that there would be a lot of milk.

Birch was also associated with protection from evil spirits. People believed that a birch tree near the house attracts all good and drives away negativity.

History of the sign and reality

Birch trees are not really struck by lightning. The tree is also popular in folk medicine: treatment of rheumatism and a number of other diseases. In addition, birch is a source of tar. In addition, the bark served as paper in ancient times.

In Christian times, an association with purity and the Virgin Mary also appeared. This gave rise to the idea that the birch is a source of positive energy.

One of the main signs says that a birch tree growing near a house will bring happiness and good luck. This fact is not confirmed, but there is no doubt that a slender birch tree decorates a garden plot, supplies useful juice and simply pleases the owners and passers-by with a pleasant view.
