Slugs may appear slow and clumsy, but they are actually very efficient at eating crops.
These pests are frightening because of their omnivorousness. They like more than 150 species and varieties of plants that are grown by both ordinary summer residents and farmers.
Slugs and the Garden
Gastropods especially like to eat cabbage, lettuce, cucumbers, strawberries. Pests eat plants not only in open ground, but also find loopholes in the greenhouse.
Slugs do not like sunlight. They like dampness and darkness, so they feed at night. But, like many other pests, slugs have weak points. Knowing these features, you can permanently clear the area of pests.
How to protect plantings
1. Slugs don't like the smell of a number of plants. For example, they will be repelled by the aroma of:
- yarrow;
- thyme;
- lavender;
- sage;
- parsley;
- basil;
- rosemary.
An infusion is made from these plants. Take 1 kg of chopped greens (one variety or collection) and pour 10 liters of boiling water over them. The solution is infused for a day and then filtered. The soil and plants are sprayed with the solution, and the remaining greens are laid out between the rows.
2. Another option is a protective strip. There are a number of materials from which it can be made:
- eggshells (crushed);
- needles;
- wood ash;
- sawdust.
The protective strip is a mechanical obstacle in the path of pests. Gastropods will not crawl to plants from which they are separated by prickly needles or eggshells.
3. Corn flour is a deadly poison not only for slugs, but also for snails. Take a 0.5 l jar, pour flour into it and place the container on its side. In the morning, collect the dead pests.
