Thriftiness is a trait of many people who grow vegetables and fruits for their own needs.
There are debates about the use of eggshells in the garden and vegetable garden. Some say that the fertilizer is useless because it takes a long time to decompose. Others are sure that it is a valuable and free fertilizer.
Who is right?
Firstly, it cannot be argued that eggshells are a cheap, and in some cases free, raw material.
Secondly, by using the shells, summer residents take on the task of recycling waste, which is also important.
Thirdly, it helps in the fight against pests. Agronomist Petr Sinkovsky emphasized that the shell protects plantings from mole crickets, caterpillars, slugs, snails, AiF reports.
How to use
For the mole cricket, you can make bait from this raw material. It is made from crushed shells and unrefined sunflower oil.
The recipe is as follows: 1 teaspoon of shell is mixed with ½ teaspoon of oil. The mixture is dug around the perimeter of the bed or added directly to the planting hole.
The mole cricket will be attracted by the smell of oil. The pest will eat the shell, will not be able to digest it and remove it from the body, and will therefore die.
As for slugs, caterpillars, snails, everything is much simpler here. Large shell fragments are scattered on the approaches to the plantings. But they are done so that there are no gaps.
It will be difficult for soft-bodied pests to get over such a barrier. If they do manage to do so, they will die from damage to the mucous membrane.
