When to Plant Potatoes in Spring 2023: The Best Days and Signs of Nature

When there was no lunar calendar for gardeners and vegetable growers, people made do with signs by which they could accurately determine that it was time to plant a particular crop.

Considering that for many people potatoes are their second bread, this article will discuss planting this vegetable.

Signs and the calendar are a good thing, but experts first of all advise following the weather forecast.

When to plant potatoes

Soviet summer residents preferred not to plant potatoes until the birch leaves reached the size of a 5-kopeck coin. Another sure sign that it is time to plant potatoes is flowering bird cherry.

If we talk about the calendar, then this is usually the period from the end of April to the first ten days of May.

If you follow the phases of the moon, then in the spring of 2023, in April, you can plant potatoes on the 26th and 27th.

In May there are significantly more such days: 2-4, 9-11, 13, 14, 22-24, as well as 29 and 30 May.

What else to consider

Gardeners recommend renewing the seed stock once every 4 years, for the simple reason that by this time the potatoes begin to degenerate, get sick more often and are stored worse.

As for the soil, it has long been noted that the best harvests are collected in black soil and loam.

When planting, you need to leave a distance of 30-40 cm between the tubers, and it is also recommended to plant the tubers in a checkerboard pattern.

Overall, this is enough to harvest potatoes, even if you have never tried to do so before this spring.
