Many suburban areas have a container for collecting various organic waste.
We are talking about a compost bin, the contents of which over time turn into excellent fertilizer.
However, the condition of the compost may be unsatisfactory.
Fertilizer often loses its effectiveness if mistakes were made when choosing a container.
The compost bin should have the following characteristics.
Reliability
The material from which the container is made must be durable.
In addition, it is important to avoid the process of rotting. To do this, you need to cover the surface of the box with special means.
Presence of holes
If air stops getting into the container, the compost will not “ripen”.
For this reason, the box must have holes. Or better yet, oblong gaps between the boards.
But the container should be covered with something on top. Moreover, there should be no holes in the lid, otherwise sediment may get inside.
Correct container size
There is no need for a box that is too big: it will only take up a lot of space and will always remain almost empty.
But a small container volume is also bad: the box will quickly fill up, and then there will be nowhere to put the waste.
Therefore, when choosing the size of the container, the gardener should at least approximately determine the volume of compost that can be collected.
Correct height of the container
The compost bin should not be too high. A meter-high container is a great choice.
But if the indicator exceeds one and a half meters, then the maturation of the fertilizer will proceed slowly.
Multiple compartments available
It is desirable that the compost bin consists of at least two compartments.
The first compartment should contain “fresh” waste, and the second – compost that is almost ready for use.
