Why do the lower leaves of potatoes turn yellow: a sign of a dangerous disease

13.04.2023 14:56

If you notice that the lower leaves on your potato bushes have changed from green to yellow, most likely a dangerous fungal disease has visited the beds.

We are talking about Fusarium wilt or Verticillium wilt.

The disease affects bushes if favorable conditions are created for it in the form of cool weather and high humidity.

Unfortunately, if the disease has already taken root, there is nothing that can be done to help the plant.

The diseased specimens will have to be dug up and destroyed by fire. Incidentally, this area is no longer suitable for planting potato beds next year.

If you don't want to find yourself in a similar situation, don't ignore preventive measures.

These include, first of all, a careful selection of seed material - discard damaged specimens and purchase tubers only from a trusted source.

Don't forget about crop rotation rules - potatoes can be planted in the same place only after 3-4 years.

Finally, do not ignore the treatment of tubers and soil, which should be carried out using fungicides and antibacterial drugs.
