Thinning carrots is a procedure that is important when growing the plant.
Removing excess shoots helps to form large and even root crops.
In addition, the risk of weeds appearing in the garden bed, which can displace the garden crop, is reduced.
In other words, weeding helps preserve the harvest and improve its quality.
But there is one problem. This is a fairly high probability of carrot fly appearance, and therefore a sharp drop in carrot yield.
Why a pest may appear
Thinning of seedlings is accompanied by the release of essential oil, which attracts dangerous insects.
The situation gets worse if the gardener leaves the weeded plants directly on the beds or between them.
However, even if the seedlings are destroyed immediately, the risk of carrot fly appearing remains high.
How to prevent an unpleasant outcome
The uninvited "guest" needs to be scared away with an unpleasant smell. In this regard, ordinary ground pepper helps.
It is enough to add this spice to water: 1 tbsp per 10 liters of liquid.
The resulting infusion should be used to spray carrots. If you carry out the procedure before weeding, no carrot fly will appear.
A bucket of prepared liquid is a sufficient volume for treating garden crops on a 10 square meter plot.
