Two related plants, black and red currants, as it may seem to a novice gardener, can grow together and bear fruit normally.
In fact, it turns out that such identical bushes have quite a lot of differences, which makes joint planting impossible.
We will tell you why you cannot plant these two shrubs together.
1. Both varieties of currant require different growing conditions.
Red currants are considered more drought-resistant and prefer warmth. Therefore, they grow well in sunny areas.
But the black one prefers moderate shade and regular watering. If you plant it in the sun, you may not get any berries, even with regular watering. In addition, it does not tolerate open areas and drafts.
2. Bushes bear fruit in different ways.
Blackcurrant yields on shoots aged 1-3 years. Then the yield decreases.
Red currants surprise with their productivity for up to 4-7 years. Therefore, the two bushes require different care. Black currants are pruned in the 3-4th year, and red currants are pruned on average in the 5th year. But this is not the most important thing.
3. Various fertilizers
Red currants have a more powerful root system. This must be taken into account. In spring, urea is often added to it (60-70 grams per 10 liters of water).
Black currants are fed with mineral supplements after harvesting.
