Sansevieria has received not only the love of flower growers for its unpretentiousness in care, but also many popular names - pike tail, mother-in-law's tongue and even snake plant.
Beautiful variegated leaves look quite impressive on their own, really resembling a snake in color. But gardeners want this plant to bloom, which it does extremely rarely and reluctantly. To achieve flowering, you will have to eliminate the reasons that prevent it.
What does sansevieria dream about?
Sansevieria came to our windowsills from tropical forests, where rainy seasons alternate with dry seasons. To provoke flowering, it is necessary to recreate its natural conditions as accurately as possible.
This means that in spring and summer you need to pamper the flower with regular (but not excessive) watering, feed it with special fertilizers for succulents and provide good lighting. It is best to take the pike tail out to the garden or balcony in the summer, where there is a lot of light and fresh air.
Important: be sure to acclimate the plant to new conditions gradually, taking it outside for 5 minutes at first, then for 10, etc. Do not put the pot in the sun right away; it is better to keep it in the shade of trees for a few weeks or to shade it from the scorching sun with something.
In winter, the pot should also be kept in a well-lit, cool place.
In autumn and winter, the plant needs a rest period. Stop fertilizing and reduce watering to a minimum.
Sansevieria is a succulent. That is, it belongs to the type of plants that accumulate moisture and nutrition in the leaves, so that later in dry periods they can survive due to these reserves. The plant can do without watering for several months, so there is no need to worry. In the spring, the pike tail will wake up after winter dormancy and release a flower stalk.
Remember: after flowering, the rosette dies, so its leaves can be cut off immediately after flowering and used as cuttings.
It should also be remembered that the plant produces flowers to reproduce, not to please people. Sansevieria resorts to this method extremely rarely.
Its main method of propagation is lateral shoots. It will bloom only when it cannot grow a "baby". That is, when the pot is cramped. If you recreate natural conditions for the plant, but the pot is spacious, and there is a lot of nutrition in it, then you may not wait for flowers.
To get sansevieria to bloom, you need to eliminate the following factors: watering in winter, a spacious pot, too nutritious soil, and insufficient light.
