Reproduction of strawberries by runners is a traditional method of rejuvenating the berry plant, but it may be ineffective if you do not know how to select young plants for seedlings.
There are several rules that allow you to approach this issue with knowledge of the matter and soon get another bed of the variety you like.
Which bushes to prune shoots from
1. The most important thing is to cut rosettes only from the strongest and healthiest bushes that bore fruit excellently last year. They should not have any damage or defects.
2. A bush that bears fruit this year is not suitable for propagation. If you decide to use it for breeding a variety, you need to take care of this point in advance so that the forces go to propagation, and not fruiting.
3. Propagation by runners is not suitable for remontant varieties.
Deadlines
The roots of young shoots on the runners are formed in June, and they are finally separated from the mother bush no later than 8 weeks later.
A developed rosette should have at least 4 leaves and developed roots about 7 cm long. After transplantation, such bushes will begin to bear fruit the following year.
The shoots closest to the bush are selected. The rest is cut off. It is recommended to leave no more than 2 tendrils and two new bushes on one plant.
