Orchids are usually sold in flower shops when they are in bloom, but they do not look like this all the time.
Houseplants decorate almost every home, but caring for them can be quite difficult. Orchids are no exception, you have to put in some effort to care for them.
All you want from them is at least a few beautiful, colorful flowers for a short time once a year. But when the time comes, orchids never bloom, leaving behind unsightly green stems and a tangle of roots.
The plant is sensitive to heat
Since the orchid comes from warmer regions of the world, it is necessary to create conditions in which it will feel at home. In addition, where it grows, there are quite large fluctuations in day and night temperatures, which should also be ensured.
One of the reasons why the plant does not bloom may be that it is in a place with too low daytime temperatures. The ideal temperature for it is +25 °C, but you can afford 3 °C more or less.
Night temperatures are just as important as day temperatures and should ideally be significantly lower. The correct temperature should be around 15°C but should not exceed 18°C.
If the orchid is exposed to higher night temperatures than recommended for a long time, it may not bloom. Also, the warm evening environment is so uncomfortable for the orchid that it may turn yellow or even rot.
You have to fertilize them properly.
Every plant needs a regular supply of important nutrients to the soil, and the orchid is no exception.
However, adding nitrogen-rich fertilizers to the pot can be harmful to them, as it is not at all beneficial for them.
Instead, choose phosphorus-based nutrients to help encourage flowering. The flowers will appear on the plant in greater numbers, larger, more colorful, and more beautiful than they would have without fertilizer.
The air must be sufficiently humid.
Orchids are naturally quite moist, but you should not exceed a certain level to avoid harming them.
The correct humidity level should be between 60 and 80 percent for the plant to feel comfortable. Only in such conditions can it form flowers and develop beautiful colors. If the humidity is too low, the plant may wilt and die, while high humidity levels will cause the roots to rot.
Ice can help
Instead of watering your plants the standard way, you can try some alternatives.
One of them is to put ice cubes on the pot, which will gradually melt and at the same time slightly cool the plant. If you place them next to the orchid in the evening, you can reduce the temperature in which it is located.
