Carrot seeds are not worth a fortune, but for the sake of experimentation and knowledge, gardeners obtain planting material from old plants.
This representative of the Umbelliferae family is a biennial plant.
In the first year of life, carrots produce a root vegetable that is used as food. In the second year, the plant produces an inflorescence with seeds.
Therefore, every gardener can get carrot seeds without visiting a garden store.
How to get carrot seeds
During harvesting, the largest, smoothest and firmest fruits are selected. They are stored in a cool place, such as a cellar or placed on a balcony.
In early spring, carrots are moved to a warm room and wait for sprouts to appear. As soon as they appear, step back at least 5 cm from the top of the fruit, cut off and plant in a flower pot.
Then they wait until the tops grow and get stronger on the windowsill. When this happens, the earthen lump together with the plant is planted in the garden bed.
After some time, the carrot will shoot up and bloom. Then they wait until the umbrella-shaped inflorescences turn into dry baskets with seeds.
