When to prune thuja
Not every landowner can spare the time to care for ornamental crops in the spring. That is why many postpone pruning until the fall.
The main thing in this matter is not to disturb the development and to ensure the tree's further successful growth. As for the shape, it is a matter of taste.
The most common form chosen for thujas is:
- pyramidal;
- columnar;
- spherical.
But there is one point that cannot be overlooked in the spring.
Types of pruning
As you know, pruning can be formative or sanitary. In the first case, you can choose the appropriate time or postpone pruning from spring to late autumn.
You can try to shape the tree for the first time in the third or fourth year after planting. It is important to let the tree take root and get stronger. Full-fledged shape-forming pruning is carried out once a year. You can also correct the shape 2-3 times in the fall.
As for sanitary pruning, it is performed both in spring and autumn, twice a year.
It is important to remove dried shoots and anything that excessively thickens the crown.
If you trim the upper shoots, the thuja may begin to grow in width. After trimming, do not forget to water the tree and adjust the dose of fertilizers, for example, if the tree is overgrown very quickly.
