In spring and early summer, summer residents face the same problem: garlic leaves turn yellow. If measures are not taken in time, a good harvest cannot be obtained.

But there are people who have solved this problem once and for all, simply by creating an algorithm for caring for garlic.

The rest, year after year, do not know what to do if the garlic feather turns yellow.

But in order to organize proper care that will eliminate the problem, you need to know the causes of yellowing.

Lower leaves turn yellow in spring

If the central feather is green and the first two leaves have turned yellow, there is no need to worry. This happens due to spring colds.

All the leaves are turning yellow

During a period of rapid growth, all the leaves may turn yellow. First, the tips change color, then the yellowness spreads further along the leaf. In this case, it is time to sound the alarm. This is a sign of nitrogen starvation.

The problem is solved by nitrogen fertilization.

You can use:

  • Nitrate or urea according to the instructions.
  • Infusion of mullein (1 part mullein, 10 parts water).
  • Infusion of bird droppings (1 part droppings, 20 parts water).
  • Infusion of green grass (1 part infusion, 10 parts water).

It is enough to do one top dressing. If the leaves turn yellow strongly, 10 days after watering with nitrogen fertilizer under the root you can do foliar top dressing.

If the leaves turn yellow after nitrogen fertilization

Sometimes the yellowing does not disappear even after nitrogen is added. Inexperienced gardeners again reach for saltpeter or mullein, but experienced gardeners know that the problem is different.

Garlic needs sulfur. If it lacks it turns yellow. You can buy sulfur in gardening stores and feed the plants by diluting the preparation according to the instructions.

You can simplify the process even more by purchasing a complex fertilizer for onions and garlic. It contains all the necessary nutrients for these plants, including sulfur in the right dosage.

If it's not about nitrogen and sulfur

When the garlic leaf apparatus is fully formed, its head begins to grow. At this time, the plant no longer needs nitrogen. But sometimes the tops of the leaves begin to turn yellow again.

During this period, the plant needs phosphorus and potassium. The plant reacts especially sharply to a lack of potassium, which is the key to a large and tasty head.

Of the mineral fertilizers, monopotassium phosphate is used according to the instructions on the packaging.

If you are a supporter of organic fertilizers, then you will need an ash infusion. 1.5 cups of ash should be poured with warm water (10 l) and infused for a day, stirring occasionally. Water the bed with this infusion.

It is easy to save garlic from yellowing. You just need to fertilize it with nitrogen, sulfur and potassium in time. And do not forget about regular watering during drought. You need to stop watering 3 weeks before harvesting.
