There are two types of raspberries: remontant and regular. Care for them is different.
Find out how to care for raspberry bushes to consistently get a good harvest.
Summer varieties of raspberries ripen in July, and remontant varieties – in August and September.
Caring for common raspberries
The work has been ongoing since July and continues until September.
It is necessary to remove dried branches that are affected by disease or injured. Those branches that have become woody are also removed. Up to ten young shoots should remain on the raspberry bush. Cut the branches very short and burn them, because they may contain pests and pathogens.
Alternate fertilizing – 1 year fertilize with organics, the next year – with mineral fertilizers. For 1 m2 you can add 5 kg of compost, manure, peat and 100 g of ash – organic fertilizers. Mineral – mix 25 g of superphosphate and 20 g of potassium sulfate.
Fertilizers containing nitrogen are not applied.
Before the frosts begin, there is no need to water the raspberries. Until then, moisten the bushes once every 10 days. Old bushes need 40 liters of water, and young ones - 20 liters of water. Watering is carried out at a distance of half a meter from the base of the bush root.
To protect the bush from pests, treat it with 1% Bordeaux mixture when you harvest. Treat the bushes at the end of summer 2 times. 14 days should pass between treatments. Fallen leaves should be removed, and the soil around the bush should be loosened and mulched with straw, peat or mown grass.
Caring for remontant raspberries
Berries can grow on new and old branches and they bear fruit for a whole month.
In autumn, you need to trim all the branches, leaving no stumps. Otherwise, the raspberry may stop being remontant. Leave 5 branches, but trim them a little. Do not forget to cover the bushes for the winter. In the spring, remove the cover, inspect the bushes and remove the branches that did not survive the winter. Do not forget to thin out the plantings.
Fill the raspberries with complex mineral fertilizer, which is applied in the fall. Dig a hole next to the bush and put 50 g of fertilizer there.
Don't forget to water the raspberries every seven days. Water the bushes well two weeks before the frost, loosen and mulch the soil.
Remove and burn all cut branches and leaves. Treat the soil with Inta-Vir, Actellic or Fufanon.
