All types of roses need pruning in autumn. This will strengthen the plant's immunity and increase its resistance to frost.

Young branches will receive more sunlight and air circulation in the bush will increase, which will reduce the risk of infection by fungal diseases.

Compact bushes can be well covered after pruning for safe wintering.

It is worth pruning not only adult plants, but also young bushes planted in the spring.

It is no longer possible to cut them just before the frost.

But it is not worth doing it too early, because it can stimulate the growth of new young branches, which will simply freeze in winter. It is advisable to prune rose bushes when the cold weather lasts for a long time.

Rose pruning rules

To do this, take a sharp and clean pruning shears, a garden saw and scissors.

Remove:

• dry and damaged branches;
• young unripe branches;
• 3-year-old branches;
• remove branches that thicken the plant, as well as old ones;
• remove inflorescences and buds that have not fully developed; make a cut at a distance of about 5-6 mm above the nearest bud.

Leave only 4-5 strong and healthy branches in the bush.

After pruning, treat the cuts with garden pitch or charcoal to prevent infection. Remove and destroy all plant debris from the area.

Pruning climbing roses

Climbing roses are also pruned, but not too much. Remove young, old and diseased branches so that the plant feels good in winter.

Cover the rose after sanitary pruning, and prune it in the spring to form a luxurious bush.
