If you are the happy owner of a grape bush growing on your plot, it would be a good idea to find out what professional winegrowers are guided by in such a process as covering the plant for the winter.
According to the expert of the online publication Belnovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , when choosing a method of protecting grapes from frost, one should take into account the climatic features of a particular region, weather conditions, as well as varietal characteristics.
Let us remember: protection is especially necessary for young plants due to their thin bark. In addition, carefully take care of actively fruiting adult plants that have given all their energy to forming fruits.
So, there are three most common types of winter shelters for grapes.
1. Instillation
This method is also called root hilling and is suitable if the temperature “overboard” drops below 15 degrees, as well as when dealing with frost-resistant varieties.
2. Partial
Partial or semi-covering involves covering the lower part of the bush with a layer of soil. The vines should be covered with non-woven material, and a 4-centimeter layer of mulch should be placed on top. Suitable for regions where winter can be described as mild.
3. Complete
If the winter months promise to be frosty, you will need to insulate the vines with a layer of mulch (from 2 to 4 cm), and build a special structure on top using slate, boards, shields. Alternatively, cover with a thick protective material. Do not forget about the need for a gap for ventilation.
