Even if you live in an apartment building and are not the happy owner of a summer house, you still have the opportunity to acquire beautiful plants.
You can use a balcony to grow them. The expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh listed the types of flowers suitable for growing on a balcony and told how to care for them.
Petunia
For planting on a balcony, the best choice is the ampelous petunia with long and flexible shoots that will hang from the windows and delight with lush flowering. Please note: petunia, although it is a sun-loving flower, should not be exposed to direct sunlight. Another important nuance: petunia should be watered in a timely manner and monitored so that the soil in which it grows is not too wet or, conversely, too dry.
Alyssum
Another option that is ideal for balcony landscaping is alyssum, which is a bright, low-growing plant that turns into a fluffy, lushly blooming ball. Anyone planning to grow this flower should remember its capricious nature and the need for careful watering, during which water should not get on the leaves. Do not overwater alyssum, regularly trim dried shoots and do not overdo it with fertilizers.
Marigold
Bright marigolds look very beautiful on the balcony. If you want to enjoy their bloom until late autumn, plant low-growing varieties in pots. Marigolds are not capricious, they can grow in the shade and partial shade, but you will achieve the most lush flowering from them if you leave the pots in the sun.
Begonia
The low begonia has beautiful, bright and lush flowers that will decorate any balcony. This plant is ideal for growing on a balcony, as it tolerates shade well. Begonia also needs moist soil, so you will have to bother with watering. It is also sensitive to temperature changes and can freeze one day if it is too cold in the morning.
Lobelia
Low-growing lobelia blooms abundantly and for a long time. Its flowers look like many small bells. It grows well in flowerpots on balconies, loggias, terraces and even outside the building. The plant is unpretentious, but does not like direct sunlight. If left in the sun, it may die. Lobelia also needs warmth and regular watering, so make sure the soil is always moist.
