American businessman Stephen Lynch intends to take part in the auction for the sale of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if it is put up for auction as part of the bankruptcy proceedings of Nord Stream 2 AG.

Lynch himself told the American publication The Wall Street Journal about this.

What Lynch said about his plans to buy Nord Stream 2

A Miami investor has called the purchase of Nord Stream 2 an unprecedented opportunity to gain control over European energy supplies until the end of the fossil fuel era.

According to him, if Nord Stream 2 ends up in US ownership, Washington will have leverage over Moscow in negotiations on Ukraine.

The businessman has already applied to the US Treasury Department for a license that will allow him to discuss the purchase of the gas pipeline with organizations under sanctions.

WSJ notes that the businessman expects to buy the gas pipeline for pennies. According to Lynch, many investors will not lay claim to this asset due to the difficult geopolitical situation.

Lynch is a supporter of US President-elect Donald Trump, having donated more than $300,000 to his campaign.

According to WSJ, before moving to Miami in 2019, the entrepreneur lived in Moscow for 20 years.

In 2007, he acquired a subsidiary of Yukos, and in 2022, the Swiss division of Sberbank.

In June, the bankruptcy procedure of Nord Stream 2 AG was extended until January next year. Transliq AG remains the temporary administrative manager of Nord Stream 2 AG.

As reported by Gazprom, the maximum term of the final moratorium on the bankruptcy of Nord Stream 2 AG, introduced on January 10 last year, is 2 years.

For reference

Nord Stream 2 is a main gas pipeline from Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea, 1,234 km long (2,468 km along two lines), which is inoperative after being sabotaged.
