It recently became known that the Eurasian Economic Union, which includes Belarus, is considering reducing the duty-free import of goods by air.
In particular, the EAEU decided to return to the norms that were in effect previously, before the pressure was put on Russia and Belarus through sanctions.
The head of the State Customs Committee of the Republic, Vladimir Orlovsky, reported this on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel.
"Work in progress"
According to him, the current regulations were introduced against the backdrop of sanctions launched by the West.
At that time, the EAEU adopted “temporary decisions to increase duty-free import standards,” fearing a potential shortage of certain goods in the Union State.
But it didn’t happen, so they decided to return to the previous standards, which the head of the State Customs Committee called well-proven and optimal.
Work is currently underway to reduce duty-free import standards for goods transported by air, he said.
And he clarified: currently the duty-free import rate by plane is 10,000 euros, they want to reduce it. But for now, possible options are being discussed.
What about ground transportation?
In the process of work, we may come to some reduction of these standards, Orlovsky admitted.
He did not name specific figures, noting that they “differ greatly in the proposals of countries and in the proposals of the EEC.”
For this reason, the discussion continues, within the framework of which a corresponding decision is being prepared, the head of the State Customs Committee noted.
According to him, the planned adjustments will only affect air transport.
Changes to the rules for duty-free import of goods through land checkpoints “are not even being considered,” Orlovsky concluded.
