Stripes! They will help to increase the space "in all directions".

Use as many striped things in the room as possible. This could be wallpaper, a carpet, a sofa cover, a backlit mirror, cabinets with ribbed fronts, etc.

Important point: the room should have both horizontal and vertical stripes. Otherwise, the life hack will only “work” in one direction.
