Why are the walls in multi-story apartment building entrances only half painted: the roots of the tradition are in the Soviet Union

Have you noticed that in many multi-story buildings the walls are painted halfway?

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, designer Yulia Tychino , explained why the lower part of the wall is covered with paint, and the upper part with whitewash.

This “tradition” dates back to Soviet times.

Back then, entrances were painted in this way for three reasons at once.

Firstly, paint was used to keep the common area looking clean and tidy, as the painted surface is much easier to clean.

Secondly, this way it was possible to save on the decoration of entrances, because then as now whitewashing costs significantly less than any paint composition.

And thirdly, our ancestors believed that this method of painting helps improve the visual qualities of entrances.

Painting walls in two neat stripes was considered sophisticated and aesthetically pleasing in the 1950s-1970s.
