No one will argue that in the Soviet Union, great attention was paid to housing construction.

The apartments may not have been the most elegant, comfortable or spacious, but one thing is for sure: nothing in the residential building designs was done just like that.

Take, for example, the window between the bathroom and the kitchen. Why it appeared was explained by designer Yulia Tychino, an expert of the online publication BelNovosti.

The window between the bathroom and the kitchen, which is an interior element of Soviet apartment buildings and is especially common in Khrushchev-era buildings, has become overgrown with many myths and legends over the years of its existence.

However, in reality, these windows were installed in old apartments in accordance with sanitary standards. They were part of projects for houses built in the 1950s, a time of active fight against tuberculosis in the USSR.

It was believed that by allowing sunlight to penetrate into all rooms of the house for at least two hours a day, the tuberculosis bacillus would be destroyed.

As time goes by, it becomes clear that this decision was highly questionable.

And when tuberculosis was defeated, windows between the bathroom and the kitchen were abandoned altogether.

Earlier, BelNovosti wrote about the most common mistakes when choosing curtains.
