Summer heat can be unbearable, especially if you don't have air conditioning in your apartment.
However, there are effective ways to cool down a space and make life more comfortable in summer weather.
Use natural ventilation
Open windows during the night and early morning when outside temperatures are coolest.
Create a draft by opening windows on opposite sides of the apartment to bring in fresh air and improve circulation.
During the day, when it gets hot outside, close the windows and curtains to avoid direct sunlight, which heats up the room. Curtains or blinds made of thick fabric or special thermal curtains will help block the heat.
Create an air flow
Use fans to create air flow in the room. Place them near open windows or doors to pull fresh air in and push hot air out.
If you have more than one fan, try setting them up so they create a cross-flow of air, which will help lower the temperature in the room.
Cool the room with water
Use fans with wet towels or ice. Hang wet towels from fans or place bowls of ice in front of them. This will cause the water to evaporate, creating a cool air effect that will circulate around the room.
Spray water from a spray bottle around the room, especially on curtains or windows. This will help cool the air and humidify the space.
Reduce heat load
Avoid using electronic devices that produce heat, especially during the hottest hours of the day. These include:
• computers;
• ovens;
• televisions;
• slabs;
• lighting.
Try reducing your use of these devices or using them during cooler times of the day.
Try to avoid cooking on the stove or in the oven to avoid unnecessary heating of the room. Instead, choose dishes that can be prepared on the grill, in a slow cooker, or take advantage of the option to order ready-made food.
Create cool zones
Create a cool zone in your apartment, such as placing a fan in front of the ice or setting up a corner with wet towels to cool you down.
Use cold springs
Freeze a bottle of water or a bag of ice and place it in front of a fan to create a stream of cool air.
Use fans directed at ice packs or wet towels to distribute the cool air throughout the room.
Pay attention to your clothes and bed linen
Dress in light, loose clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen that allow your skin to breathe.
Use bed linen made from natural, breathable materials, also preferably in light shades to reflect sunlight.
