The name of the winner of the prestigious Booker literary prize for 2024 has been announced.
The jury named British writer Samantha Harvey the winner, thus evaluating her novel "In Orbit".
The chairman of the jury, writer and sculptor Edmund de Waal, officially announced this at a ceremony in London, TASS reports .
According to him, Harvey's work, which is only 136 pages long, is distinguished by the uniqueness of its theme and the way it is presented.
In the novel, the reader has the opportunity to see the Earth through the eyes of six cosmonauts (two of them Russian) aboard the ISS.
The action of the novel takes place over the course of a day, when the astronauts observe sunrises and sunsets, glaciers, mountain peaks, and ocean waves.
By the way, “In Orbit” is the fifth novel in the British writer’s career.
Let us add that the shortlist of nominees for the award also included the following names:
- American Percival Everett (novel "James");
– Australian Charlotte Wood (book “Prayer in a Stone Bag”);
- Canadian Anne Michaels (novel "In Arms");
- American Rachel Kushner ("Lake of Creation");
- representative of the Netherlands Yael van der Wooden (novel "Save").
As for the winner, Harvey will receive a cash prize of £50,000 ($65,000) in addition to the award.
