Coffee has been recognized as a healthy drink. One of the conditions for its usefulness is moderate consumption.
This can be confirmed by the recent discovery of Austrian scientists about the effect of coffee on brain health.
Employees of the Austrian Murdoch University worked on this question.
Drinking more than three cups of coffee a day has been found to be associated with decreased cognitive function as we age.
The results of the study were published by the Daily Mail.
Research details
In total, several thousand British residents were involved in the scientists' work.
During the survey, volunteers were asked how often they drink tea and coffee.
Thus, it became known that more than half of those surveyed said that they drink up to three cups of coffee a day.
A quarter do not drink coffee at all and 18% of volunteers drank 4 or more cups a day.
47% of participants drank 4 or more cups of tea daily.
38% no more than three cups and 15% did not drink tea at all.
The subjects' cognitive abilities were also assessed, and the studies were repeated 10 years later.
Conclusions of scientists
It turned out that drinking more than 3 cups of coffee a day was associated with the risk of cognitive decline with age.
Scientists have discovered problems with memory, thinking, and decision-making.
And drinking tea had a protective effect, as it slowed down the process of deterioration of brain function.
