Belarusian scientists are sounding the alarm: every 5th child in the country has problems with excess weight.

In particular, this was reported by the Deputy Head of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Academician, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Alexander Kilchevsky.

He shared this alarming information during a round table discussion dedicated to the problem of childhood obesity, reports the Belta agency.

The scientist separately noted that this problem is global and very serious.

According to statistics provided by the academic, approximately 40 million children worldwide suffer from obesity.

And almost every fifth child in our country also has these problems,” said Kilchevsky.

And he added: obesity leads to such diseases as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular problems.

The scientist named lifestyle changes as the key reason for the emergence of obesity in young citizens.

Nowadays, children spend a lot of time on gadgets and go into the virtual world, they lack physical activity. At the same time, they still love sweet food, he explained.

The NAS representative suggests fighting the scourge through obesity prevention, monitoring the child’s diet and leading an active lifestyle.

The doctor of biological sciences considers these recommendations to be the most relevant today.
