From today, November 1, 2024, a ban on the movement of cars with Belarusian license plates within the country has come into force in Latvia.

The press service of the State Customs Committee of Belarus reported this on its official telegram channel.

The agency reminds that in September of the same year, the Latvian Saeima adopted in the final reading an amendment to the Law on Road Traffic.

According to this amendment, owners of cars with Belarusian license plates are required to take them out of the country or re-register them by October 31.

If the proposed options are not implemented, the vehicles may be confiscated.

The State Customs Committee has released information received by the Consulate General of Belarus in Daugavpils from the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In particular, it is stated that as of yesterday, October 31, the movement of vehicles registered in Belarus is prohibited on the territory of Latvia.

It is specified that we are talking about those of them that correspond to the TN VED code 8703 (mechanical vehicles for the transportation of people with a capacity of less than 10 people).

The restriction does not apply to buses operating regular international road transport between Belarus and Latvia.

The exception is cases when the vehicle data “corresponds to position 8703”.

Another exception: Belarusian vehicles used by diplomatic and consular missions are permitted to travel within Latvia.
