Taxi drivers often require passengers to wear seat belts, including those in the back seat.
They argue that if they are stopped by the traffic police, they will be fined.
Who Should Pay the Fine for Not Wearing a Seat Belt?
As reported by Argumenty i Fakty v Belarusi, citing Vladimir Gorbachev, a lawyer at the Mogilev Regional Bar Association, the driver pays for a passenger who is not wearing a seat belt.
From January 1, this will entail administrative liability in the form of a fine of up to 1 base unit.
For a repeated violation within a year, the fine is from 2 to 5 base units.
For the first violation, a written warning may be issued; if the driver admits guilt and agrees to pay the fine, it may be minimal.
The traffic rules provide for exceptions. Passengers with certain illnesses and pregnant women after 20 weeks may not wear seat belts.
