Fabric softener gives your laundry a pleasant aroma, softness and freshness. However, not all items can be washed with fabric softener, as it can harm them. What items should not be washed with fabric softener and why?
Sportswear is most often made from synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon or spandex, which have properties that help wick moisture and heat away from the body, keeping it dry.
However, fabric softener can ruin these properties because it:
• fills the pores in the fibers, making them less breathable and absorbent;
• reduces the elasticity and shape of items, making them less suitable for sports;
• promotes the development of bacteria and odors, as it creates a favorable environment for their growth.
Therefore, it is better to wash sportswear without conditioner, as well as without bleaches and rinses.
Towels are things that should be soft, fluffy and absorbent.
However, fabric softener can make towels stiff. This is because fabric softener:
• reduces the volume and fluffiness of the towel, making it less soft and pleasant to the touch;
• worsens the structure of the towel fibers, as it makes it difficult for water and detergent to penetrate deep into the fibers.
Therefore, it is better to wash towels without conditioner, as well as without excessive amounts of detergent. It is also recommended to dry towels in the air or in a dryer, and shake them before drying.
Children's clothing is something that should be safe and hypoallergenic.
However, fabric softener can make baby clothes dangerous, stiff and allergenic. This is because the conditioner:
• contains chemicals that may cause irritation, itching, rash or asthma in children;
• leaves a film on clothes that can scratch or chafe the baby’s delicate skin.
Therefore, it is better to wash children's clothes without conditioner, as well as without fragrances, dyes and bleaches.
