If the clothes have turned very yellow, the effectiveness of ammonia can be increased with hydrogen peroxide (3 tbsp) and salt (1 tbsp). Tar soap will also enhance the effect of the cleaning solution.
After washing, all that remains is to rinse the items in cold water, and then you can additionally wash them in the machine.
