There is a very large selection of citrus fruits on the shelves of supermarkets. However, it is not always possible to buy good quality oranges.
There are several signs that indicate that a fruit is sweet, ripe and tasty.
The orange peel should have a bright and uniform color. Also, the peel should be smooth with single inclusions that are colored red.
The weight of an orange can indicate the juice content of the fruit, because the juiciest ones are also the sweetest. Therefore, the fruit should be heavy, but not always large.
Sweet varieties are considered to be oranges in which the top or "navel" is clearly visible. When cut, this top consists of another small fruit.
At normal temperatures, they are kept in a pot in the kitchen for a week. In a cooler, drier place, they can be stored for several weeks, but only if the fruits are not overripe.
Oranges in a refrigerator, cellar or other cool place should be checked regularly.
If dents appear on the fruit, then such fruit cannot be stored; it must be processed or consumed.
From time to time, moisture and condensation may appear on the surfaces of oranges, which must be removed regularly.
To do this, wipe them with a clean cloth and wash them before use. Storage conditions and shelf life will depend on the specific variety.
Before using orange zest, it must be thoroughly soaked in hot water to remove bitterness, chemical impurities and pesticides.
